Damondre Grice-known to most as MondreM.A.N. (Main.Attrakionz.N****)-is just like any other 22 year old who grew up in North Oakland. His life is an unpredictable ride along a series of precipices, but unlike his geographical peers he is one half of Main Attrakionz, The Greatest Duo Ever. After catching the attention of Fader, Pitchfork, Mishka, and other prominent outlets early in their career, the duo released their widely-acclaimed 808's and Dark Grapes II in the summer of 2011. With the release, Main Attrakionz drew praise from tastemaker outlets within and beyond the realm of hip hop. The project featured a track "Take 1" produced by longtime collaborator Clams Casino, and a then-unknown A$AP Rocky. Rocky later repurposed the track for his own album, and the potential impact of Mondre's art became evident. This crucial moment in his career inspired Damondre, to push his art further while firmly cementing his place in the current era of rap. Drawing from an existence that finds positivity and productivity amongst precarious paths, MondreM.A.N.'s art is inextricably linked to his life as a citizen of North Oakland. Whether he's encouraging you to bounce, swag hard, cloudd up, or take a moment and appreciate the beauty of life, he does it all with an inimitable sincerity.
Next week sees the release of his debut LP, They Say I Struggle Rap, and in advance of that he is streaming the album in full for a week. Check it out, along with an interview with Noisey in which Mondre talks about the upcoming album, the future of Main Attrakionz and the current state of hip hop, below.
