Youth Lagoon

Twenty-two year old Trevor Powers, whose musical venture is called Youth Lagoon, has had a long year. Not because he's been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life - the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living.

"Youth Lagoon isn't me." says Powers. "It's merely a part of me. I was in and out of different bands in high school and always tried to define myself by what music I played. I tried to find a sense of meaning by being in a band. But it wasn't until this last year - when I realized I was more than just music - that I was able to create music that means something to me. And that is Youth Lagoon."

Throughout the course of 2010, Powers began to write an album about things he had a hard time talking about. He claims that when he tries to talk about it to people, he doesn't make sense. So he wrote an album about it titled The Year of Hibernation.

"For my whole life I've dealt with extreme anxiety." says Powers. "Not anxiety about passing a test or somewhat normal things, but weird.. bizarre things. Things that only I know. I sometimes feel like I'm literally being eaten up inside. So I started writing these songs. Not just songs about my anxiety, but about my past and my present. Songs about memories, and all those feelings that those bring. I know that if I can be honest about what is inside my mind, there will be others that will be able to relate to it."

Although his music seems somewhat dreamy with the first listen, the lyrics show a different side to the matter. Hidden beneath the melodies is a voice that is eerie yet nostalgic. Powers claims his music is like letting people read his journal. "I don't think I could ever write a completely happy album. It's not that I'm not a happy person," claims Powers, "but I just have too many things in my mind that haunt me."

The Year of Hibernation by Youth Lagoon is due Sept. 27 on Fat Possum (and on Lefse in Europe) - stay tuned for more details.

"After slacking off for easily four or five minutes, the slaves of GWAR are back at it, laboring ceaselessly to satisfy our muddied desire and provide you with the sick shit you crave," said crass uber-thing Oderus Urungus. "Everyone is ordered to attend the GWAR B-Q and pay homage to their undead overlords of necrotic filth, US, the mighty GWAR, and maybe even join us for a yummy grilled baby-ass."

In other Slave Pit news, the new episode of the Blood Vomits, Slave-Pit's Kickstarter funded animated comedy short, is wrapping up its editing and should be premiering soon on gwar.net. Slave Pit has also unfortunately had to take down their popular GWAR-B-Q and GWAR.TV pages, due to server issues. And finally, there are rumors going around that the Crack-a-Thon may be back, sooner than you think! Look for an announcement next week!

Despite getting kicked off Red Eye for disemboweling Sarah Palin, Oderus wasted little time in finding another platform to terrorize the airwaves--and what better place to do that than from the #1 syndicated metal radio show in the U.S., Full Metal Jackie! That's right, for the past few months Oderus has been appearing on Jackie's show in "The Mad Minute", in which our warty anti-hero mouths off about a variety of topics, covering a spectrum from "jenkum" to Fred Durst and why he sucks so bad. Check out the mind of a mad man--or at least someone that is mad--atThe Mad Minute on Full Metal Jackie!

LD photo

"Little Dragon makes pop music for folks who think they hate pop music" - NPR

"But you need to listen to it if only because rarely do young bands step forward so quickly with something this majestic and memorable and modern. Little Dragon's evolution will be fun to listen to. Maybe even more than Prince's next three albums." - ESQUIRE

"Sure to be your sultry summer soundtrack." - Complex

"If it was a love invocation, it worked. Swoon!" - Fader

"If you're looking for a new band to love, this little Swedish electro/soul outfit could be what you've been waiting for." -Huffington Post

"The sweet spot separating Motown and Paisley Park" - Esquire

"An alternatively propulsive and delicate sound dictated by strains of electro and the striking vocal coo of Yukimi Nagano." - Spin

"You can dance to these tracks, but you can also just chill out to them-the music is a sort of indie jazz that'll suit any type of playlist." -- Teen Vogue

"...Richly textured and highly vibe-y electronic music that could soundtrack both the dance party ("Night Light," "Little Man") and the chill-out room ("Crystalfilm," "When I Go Out"). -- RollingStone.com

"Pressing yet vulnerable, the title track on the new "Ritual Union" sounds like an electro-tweaked update of the sleek Holland-Dozier-Holland-produced hits of mid-'60s Motown. " - Washington Post

---

Little Dragon is celebrating the release of Ritual Union this week, an album which finds futuristic, trance-like rhythms mixed with the soulful vibes of their debut LP plus upfront and danceable sounds of Machine Dreams. The support has been unbelievable with positive support from all sides of the music industry including a "First Listen" from NPR leading up to the release and the current "Listening Party" provided by AOL's Spinner.com: http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/1

As with each of their previous albums, Little Dragon did all of the recording themselves at the Seal Colonie, the same place where they all lived together in their early days. "We're all about writing in our space, our bubble," Yukimi says. "We haven't really recorded in any fancy studios. We'd rather be in our junkyard."

With its unusual cover artwork (drawn by Yukimi's father in the '70s) and playful, imaginative videos (for "Twice, "Constant Surprises" and "After the Rain"), Little Dragon's self-titled debut offered a distinctive and wondrous visual aesthetic to go with its unique, enchanting sound. Despite their CD being available only as an import in the US, the group sold out clubs across the country during their first American tour in '08. A smattering of positive press clippings began recognizing Nagano and her understated yet unmistakable voice.

Little Dragon's second album, Machine Dreams,a more uptempo set with '80s influences like Prince and Depeche Mode working their way into the mix, followed in 2009. Meanwhile, Gorillaz front man Damon Albarn tapped Little Dragon to appear on their album Plastic Beach and to open-along with De La Soul-their arena-filling world tour. Also in 2010, the group appeared on "If You Return" from Maximum Balloon, aka the solo project of Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio. The next chapter leads toRitual Union, their third LP out now on Peace Frog / EMI as of July 26th. A remix EP featuring contributions from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Tensnake is out now as well. Little Dragon also plan to do a full US tour in October with many dates to be added. For now Terminal 5 in NYC & Avalon in LA have been added proving the band's exponential growth and hard work over the years.

Watch "All Is Not Lost" Music Video on the NY Times Website

OK Go teamed up with director Trish Sie (sister of lead singer Damian Kulash), the modern dance troupe Pilobolus and a team from Google to create the latest HTML5 Chrome Experiment and musical experience. The project showcases the latest in modern browser technology, using 12 separate windows to create a kaleidoscopic dance that is partially choreographed by the viewer. At the beginning of the experience, users are invited to type a message in English, Japanese, or any language using the Roman or Katakana alphabets, and the message is incorporated into the dance. The New York Times Magazine will run a photo feature on the making of "All Is Not Lost" this Sunday, July 31.

The collaboration marks another milestone in OK Go's ongoing challenge to the existing state of creativity and the music industry. Says singer Damian Kulash,

"Working with Pilobolus - and of course with Trish - has been great because they share our belief that last century's creative boundaries are irrelevant. These days, a great creative idea is a great creative idea, period. You don't have to choose in advance whether your outlet is records, or films, or dances, or a computer program. Videos don't have to be subordinate advertising material for albums, and dance doesn't have to be confined to the theater. We were like peas in a pod with Pilobolus, trying to make something that lives in the world of dance, and music video, and digital space, but isn't confined to any of those spaces alone."

"We've been talking for a long time about making a dance for small screens," says Itamar Kubovy, Executive Director of Pilobolus. "There is no one on earth we'd rather do this with than OK Go and Trish Sie - it's an inspired three-way marriage."

To celebrate the video's premiere, OK Go and Pilobolus will screen the clip and perform a live version of "All Is Not Lost" tonight at the Joyce Theatre in New York City. The pre-order for the video, which will be released on August 9, launches today at http://www.okgo.net . A 3D version of "All Is Not Lost" is also available beginning today, exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS™ system, Nintendo's newest hand-held system which lets users experience 3D games, take 3D pictures and watch 3D videos without the need for special glasses.

On August 9, OK Go will release the "All Is Not Lost" EP. Available worldwide through iTunes and from http://okgo.net, it will feature the album track, a live version, and remixes by Keys N Krates and Serious Business, along with an HD, non-interactive version of the video.

"All Is Not Lost" is the latest in an inventive series of videos based on songs from OK Go'slatest studio album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, which was produced by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT) and debuted in the Top 40 of The Billboard 200. The band recently released 180/365 - a reference to the number of shows OK Go played in 2010 - a 15-track live collection recorded during their 2010 fall tour and produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann.

OK Go will be performing at President Obama's birthday event in his and their hometown of Chicago on August 3 at The Aragon Ballroom starting at 4pm. Fans can go to this link to attend:http://my.barackobama.com/baracksbirthday

While in Chicago, they'll play Lollapalooza on August 5. Other festival appearances include Kanrocksas in Kansas City, KS on August 6 and San Francisco's Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival on August 13.

Brooklyn power-duo Noxious Foxes announce new album and East Coast tour dates

Brooklyn power-duo Noxious Foxes announce new album and East Coast tour dates

Noxious Foxes
"Remember Hella? Noxious Foxes remind me of that duo. Duos that rock out really rule. Like No Age. And The Captain & Tennille. Remember Television? Ever notice how a lot of that clean math-rock guitar sound is reminiscent of Television's guitar sound? Well anyway, if you like rapid-fire instrumentals that would make a good soundtrack for those nights when you have to dodge all those crazy space ghosts that come at you hard from all directions (that happens to you too, right?), I recommend Noxious Foxes." -- Oh My Rockness

Brooklyn, NY frenetic power-duo Noxious Foxes announce the release of their sophomore album,Légs. In support of the record, the band takes to the road today for a string of East Coast dates, with more extensive touring to follow. Please see current dates below.

Check out MP3s for album tracks "Heavenly Spectacular" HERE and "Doth Shalt Noth" HERE. Stream the full album HERE.

On one particularly hot August day in 1983, Richard Levengood (beats) entered the world. The very next day, Justin Talbott (riffs) left his womb behind. Eighteen years later, they met in college through peers with a shared appreciation for At The Drive-In, in a band they called Jack Bauer. Hot Augusts came and went until they eventually both settled in Brooklyn.

Noxious Foxes began in 2009 in Thump Studios, a Brooklyn recording studio owned by Levengood. Songs were written in live and active collaboration with the aid of a looper pedal. Once they had 6 tracks finished, they recorded and released their debut album Lovestorm. Upon its release, they played shows around New York and immediately began work on a follow-up.

Légs was recorded over the course of 7 months at Thump. With it, their sound matured considerably -- the walls of loops got thicker and louder, beats became more intricate and complex. An electric piano and a synthesizer, also played by Justin, were added to round out the sonic blast. Since each song was written live with loopers, their recordings maintain the same layer building process as their live show.

The release of Légs also marks the formation of Justin and Richard's record label Broth IRA. With a fully equipped recording studio at their disposal and many musically talented friends, they are setting out to help bring more albums to life.

Légs is available now on 2xLP and Digital Download via Broth IRA.

The Nocturnes (feat. Emma Rundle of Red Sparowes) announce new album, video premiere on Consequence of Sound

The Nocturnes announce new album, premiere video on Consequence of Sound

Red Sparowes guitarist leads dark, folky shoegaze band

The Road video

Click image above to watch video

The Nocturnes -- the band led by Red Sparowes guitarist Emma Ruth Rundle -- announce the forthcoming release of their second album, Aokigahara. As a preview, Consequence of Sound has posted the premiere video for the song "The Road", an icy, trippy look at some kind of secret society ritual. Watch it HERE.

The Los Angeles based quartet has set up a Kickstarter account for special pre-orders, offering original artwork created by Rundle for larger donations in addition to immediate downloads of the album. Find more info about their Kickstarter fund HERE.

The MP3 single for "The Road" is available via the group's Bandcamp page HERE.

The Nocturnes are the folkgaze brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Emma Ruth Rundle. While the band began as a duo in 2007 and built a cult following prior to her joining Red Sparowes in 2009,Aokigahara is nonetheless a dramatic rebirth for The Nocturnes. Featuring a revamped quartet lineup, the 8-song album ventures into multiple textures of style and sound that create a lush haze of melody that blends hints of folk, shoegaze, chamber pop, goth and post-rock.

Rundle is joined on this recording by guitarist/vocalist Julian Rifkin, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Paris Patt and drummer Dave Clifford (also of Red Sparowes). Aokigahara was written collectively, combining the different styles and personalities of the players. Some of the songs were built from Rundle's unrecorded older songs, others were written by Rifkin ("Craving", "Hello Neighbor") and others penned as a group ("Aokigahara", "The Road"). The album takes a more ethereal approach -- leaving behind the more direct vocal and rock-leaning song structures of the band's earlier releases -- for a new sound awash with reverb, drifting voices and harmonies, atmospheric guitars, Twin Peaks-esque bass lines and orchestral style drumming.

As a duo featuring Rundle and drummer Daniel Yasmin, The Nocturnes released their debutWellington EP in January 2008 while based in New Zealand. Upon returning to Los Angeles, the duo issued the full length A Year of Spring the following year. In this time, Rundle formed a close musical connection with Patt, who contributed bass guitar to the debut album. The Live on KXLU EP released in 2010 shows hints of what was to come, as Rundle was joined by Rifkin for the drum-less session when Yasmin was unable to play. He left the band shortly thereafter, relocating to the Bay Area.

In 2010 the newly solidified quartet recorded a set of songs in Venice, CA in what was once a studio space used by the Beach Boys. In a way, you can almost hear the famous Wilson clan's melancholic harmonies and saturated Wall of Sound within the somber, pliant and thoroughly soaring songs ofAokigahara. The group of native Angelinos take to the road following the album's release in late August on LP, CD and Digital Download.
