Bayside's Anthony Raneri Adds East Coast Solo Dates in January 2010!

NEW YORK, NY - As a special New Years present, Anthony Raneri of Bayside has added a string of headlining solo tour dates in addition to his run on the 2010 West Coast edition of the "Where's the Band?" Tour. Support on his East Coast headlining dates include Vinnie Caruana (Movielife, I Am the Avalanche) and JT Woodruff (Hawthorne Heights) on Jan. 20-21st and Kevin Devine and Shane Henderson (Valencia) from Jan. 22nd-24th (full dates below).

Earlier this month, Anthony unveiled a new demo, "The Ballad of Bill the Saint" on his personal MySpace page (www.myspace.com/anthonyraneri) to a wealth of fan applause. "Lyrically, I just wanted to try telling a story," says Anthony. "I don't think that singing about the hardships of being in a touring rock band are very relatable, so I wanted to try writing a few songs that used a fictional character's life as a metaphor for mine." His songwriting prowess has been praised by the likes of Alternative Press, ("Anthony Raneri's lyrics completely cut to my core"), Wonka Vision ("lyrically, the band has reached the epiphany within... they put the rock back in punk rock"), to IGN ("the band writes the best songs and delivers with the passion and power that made Jimmy Eat World so successful"). He continues, " I wanted to convey the situations or feelings I was having, but I had to take them outside of my own personal situation so people could understand."

The 2010 Edition of the WHERE'S THE BAND? Tour includes solo acoustic performances by Dustin Kensrue (Thrice), Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids, The New Amsterdams), and Chris Conley (Saves The Day, Two Tongues).

Lull and Void.

As we all know, the week betwixt Christmas and New Year's is something of a deadzone as far as getting work done goes. This also seems to apply to the news, as we're not really getting anything new to tell you about. But don't fret! The news will pick up again after the new year turns.

In the meantime, stick around and forgive our meager offerings. Leave a comment! We like comments.

EMBRYONIC DEVOURMENT: Album Update + 2010 Tour Dates Announced

California technical death/grind four-piece EMBRYONIC DEVOURMENT will release their second full-length, Vivid Enterpretations Of The Void, in the early part of 2010 (label TBA). The follow-up to their Fear of Reality Exceeds Fantasy 2007 debut, Vivid Enterpretations Of The Void is based the Reptilian Agenda, a theory researched, written and spoken about extensively by British author/reporter/former pro football player David Icke for well over a decade. The disc is being recorded and engineered by Anomalous guitarist Nate Vennarucci and will be mixed and mastered by Vile's Colin Davis at Imperial Studios.

Elaborates vocalist/bassist Austin Spence of the new material: "We feel that the new material will be our best yet and will make the previous releases sound sloppy in comparison. We've really come along way as musicians. All the practicing, touring, recording, loading gear, pissing and shitting music all these grueling years are finally starting to pay off! We also have a second guitarist now -- Adam Weber of Mummification. He's a sick guitar player that will add a whole new element to the recording and overall sound of our band. We tried to make this one way more technical in the vein of Formulas Fatal To The Flesh- era Morbid Angel but with a more spastic, ever-changing approach. There are lots of surprises around each stretch of music."

Vivid Enterpretations Of The Void Tracklisting:

“Militarized Reptoids”
“Gravitational Oblivion”
“Vivid Enterpretations Of The Void”
“We Are Chitauri”
“Eye Of The Horomatangi”
“Cleansing The Infinite”
“Darkened Fluids”
“Perception Of The Multidimensional”

EMBRYONIC DEVOURMENT will tour in support of Vivid Enterpretations... this spring and with any luck, be pillaging a town near you. The routing thus far:

Holopaw: The Retelling Project

Holopaw invites two dozen visual artists to interpret its latest album, Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness.

Holopaw as interpreted by Micah Daw

24 visual artists were asked to respond to/remix/reimagine Holopaw's new release, Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness. The name of the project was derived from a line in the song "The Lazy Matador" that reads, "In the retelling let it be rendered just a pinprick, just a puncture, just a scratch." The remarkable contributions to The Retelling took the form of painting, drawing, collage, video, film, and performance.

The band is currently in the process of posting the results on their blog - http://holopawmusic.blogspot.com/

The band is also welcoming your submissions to this ongoing project at holopawmusic@gmail.com

Band Bio:
"The Art Teacher and the Little Stallion" is the first track on Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness. the third offering from Holopaw. The song introduces the character the Little Stallion who inhabits most of the songs to come. "Toy piano tinklings punctuate his every step" as we follow his coming of age. His journey is marked by lost sailors, boys on motorbikes, lazy matadors, hobbyists and foxes lurking in fake gas lamp light. The Little Stallion welcomes these characters, seduces them with "polished pearls" or is, in turn, seduced by their "horseplay, towel whips and bathing suits rolled down off sunless hips". He falls in love with them and, more often than not, betrays them causing him to lament, "So many sailors lost to this drunken sea, so many sailors lost to me." There is sweetness and grit, longing and potential violence.
Holopaw musically plays with similar tensions: lulling strings are undercut by anxious guitars, lilting "la's" turn sinister and demanding. In "Little Stallion with a Glass Jaw" horn blasts announce a charge that is quickly clipped to a hush. The bounce of "P-a-l-o-m-i-n-e" stumbles towards chaos at the bridge only to be righted by a whimsical Bay City Rollers-esque chant. The last song on the record, "The Hobbyist and the Conductor (Avalanche)" begins with bright, carillon chimes that stand in stark contrast to the thunderous din that ends the song like a slack jawed finale to a fireworks display. Triumphant "la's" punch through the smoke and ash to have the final say.
The band articulating these musical tensions is Holopaw's strongest yet. The core songwriting team of John Orth and Jeff Hays has remained constant. The lineup has contracted and expanded in the swampy heat of Gainesville, Florida to now include Patrick Quinney, Matt Radick, Jeff McMullen, Christa Molinaro and Jody Bilinski. Throughout the record Pink Razor's Erin Tobey lends sublime backing vocals and harmonies to buoy these otherwise troubled tales.
The album was recorded over a year and several trips to New York by Jeremy Scott (Woods, Vivian Girls, These Are Powers) at The Civil Defense studios in Brooklyn, USA. Holopaw is joined by members of Taigaa!, the Good Good, and Mahogany who add violin, clarinet, and trombone. Their additions further embellish arrangements that include trumpet, pedal steel, organ, accordion, piano, cello, clavinet, pianet and rhodes. After two records on the Sub Pop label (Holopaw, s/t and Quit +/or Fight), the band considered both self-release and working with Glacial Pace Recordings (owned and operated by John's friend and collaborator on the Ugly Casanova record, Isaac Brock) before deciding to join the Bakery Outlet family.
The last line of Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness. calls out, "The trains that you sent screaming into tunnels (boot black) will spill into the light. La, La, La, La, La!" Oh, Glory. Indeed.

Das Racist: New Video, New EP, Shows, etc in 2010

DECONSTRUCTIONALIST-RAP DUO DAS RACIST SHATTERS STEREOTYPES OF STONER-RAP WITH HARD WORK
2010 BRINGS ON EP, MIXTAPE, VIDEO AND TOURING FOR RAP DUO

Them boys are up to something again! This past month Das Racist organized the New York Times-approved MinorityFest in their hometown of Brooklyn. The night consisted of a panel discussion on race moderated by Das Racist, comedy sets from six up-and-coming comedians including Ali Wong and Kumail Nanjiani, and performances by the boys themselves amongst others. Earfarm.com called the night "a good time – and different. Think college dorm party meets intellectual salon."

Fresh off the heels of that project Das Racist is putting the immigrant work ethic they've inherited to good use and pressing onward with a busy winter. This past week they premiered their video for "Rainbow in the Dark," directed by frequent collaborator Jordan Fish (jordan-fish.com), on Pitchfork Media. They also recently launched their website, http://www.dasracist.net, which was designed by Fish.

Prefix Mag recently stated "Now we just need an album from the band in 2010." Ask and ye shall receive! This coming January Das Racist is poised to release their debut EP, Sit Down, Man on their own imprint Greedhead Records. Along with five other joints, the EP will include their inescapable hit "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell," which was MTV News' 10th Best Song of 2009. Greedhead Records will also collaborate with Portland, Oregon-based Lasercave (http://www.lasercave.biz/) to put out the debut EP from SAFE (http://www.myspace.com/safesafesafesafesafe) in the form of mp3s, cassette tapes, and custom made VHS' by the artist.

As if that wasn't enough, the boys will be playing shows across New York, including:

January 19 at Highline Ballroom (431 W. 16th Street, NYC) with Gordon Voidwell, Tanlines and Mickey Factz

January 23 at Glasslands (289 Kent Ave, Brooklyn) with Chicago's BBU (Bin Laden Blowin’ Up)

and they will make their way to their alma mater Wesleyan University for a February 12 date. Come March, you can see them at SXSW and by then they'll have even more tunes for you to rock to on the train with their Shut Up, Dude Mixtape set to release prior to then.

Don't miss the act Art Forum recently called "critical-race-theory prankstas". For more information on Das Racist you can visit http://www.dasracist.net or hit them up on Twitter at www.twitter.com/dasracist. Not enough? Check out their blog: http://gordongartrelle.blogspot.com.

((un)) is a richly-detailed record as strikingly innovative and contrasting as it is sonically impressive. A pop record inspired as much by Black’s love for the “transcendent, emotional wonder” of acts like Nick Drake and Sigur Ros as it is fueled by his passion for the hip hop production of J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Timbaland. Its songs flit seamlessly from throbbing electro-rhythms to heart-tearing strings, from plaintive acoustic guitar strums to shuddering hip hop beats - these are songs which are sure to breathe life, heart and soul out of your stereos.

The Bouncing Souls Announce New Album, "Ghosts On The Boardwalk," Out January 12th on Chunksaah Records!

By the end of the Bouncing Souls' set, a run of anthems from “Old School” through “Kids and Heroes,” fans had all but overtaken the stage: shouting into microphones, dispensing hugs and high-fives. The band had become merely a conduit, creating the space for other people's joy. - The New York Times

Their set is anthem after anthem, frontman Greg Attonito unabashedly taking pictures with fans mid-song, happily shaking hands with teenagers who will go to school tomorrow and brag about it, and amiably, if a bit distantly, tossing off songs from all of the band's eras--this is a band that still unabashedly plays "Old School" to kids who hadn't been born when that song came out. - The Village Voice

In 2009, The Bouncing Souls celebrated their 20th anniversary as a band by releasing a new song on the first of each month throughout the year, via digital download. They also pressed these songs onto a series of 7" vinyl records which they sold everywhere they went on a year-long world tour. Here, finally, those twelve songs have been gathered into a complete collection, entitled "Ghosts on The Boardwalk," available January 12th on Chunksaah Records.

* This enhanced CD features "The Bouncing Souls 20 Year Anniversary TV Special" and will be available at the band's upcoming 3rd Annual Home For The Holidays shows in Asbury Park, NJ December 26th - 29th. Preorders are available now at Chunksaah.com and ship on January 5th. Check out the band's recent Daytrotter Session here!

The Octagon’s Will Glass and Zachary Mexico met as kids in boarding when Glass made fun of Mexico’s Green Day t-shirt. The guys huddled together in dorm rooms, late at night, drinking from warm 40’s of St. Ides and handles of Captain Morgan, listening to Motown, Astral Weeks, Guided by Voices, Dead Kennedys, and The Grateful Dead. Eventually landing in NYC, Glass and Mexico met up with bass player The Bunny, forming The Octagon and touring behind two albums.

Other pursuits came calling and Mexico relocated to China - where he still spends part of the year - to write his first book, “China Underground” (Soft Skull Press, 2009) which became a bestseller in Singapore. Glass went on the road as the touring drummer for Dirty Projectors and The Bunny languished in Williamsburg, spending his days begging for money outside the Bedford Avenue L stop to support his gourmet sandwich habit.

And then, in the dark winter days of February 2009, the members of The Octagon found themselves back together and working on a new batch of songs in their dimly lit practice space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Led by the lo-fi recording expertise of Glass, the band spent three days laying down thirty tunes to analog cassette tape on two Tascam four-track recorders. The result is Warm Love and Cool Dreams Forever, an album full of Mexico’s warm Fender Mustang, Bunny’s full bass tones, and the clean and crisp jazz-inflected drumming of Glass.

The songs are concise bursts of energy – short and to the point -- showing off the band’s gift for penning simple, catchy melodies mixed with sonic and structural experimentation. It’s a cool enough sound to be represented on a boarding school kid’s t-shirt... and catchy enough for another one to make fun of him for.

P.O.S Announces "Every Never Is Now" Headlining Tour

Performs at the MTVu Woodies * Spin declares Never Better "Top 10 Best Album You Might Have Missed" * MySpace Puts Never Better in their Top 50 of 2009

P.O.S performing "Optimist" at the MTVu Woodies

It's been quite a year for Rhymesayers recording artist P.O.S - Never Better marked the third album from this Minneapolis rapper, which appeared on multiple year end lists including Spin's "Top 10 Best Album You Might Have Missed" and MySpace's Top 50. After four videos (Drumroll, Optimist, Purexed, Never Better), a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Why Go”, MTV2 Discover and Download artist nod, a solo cup performance at the MTVu Woodies and non-stop touring it doesn’t look like P.O.S. will be slowing down anytime soon. He'll hit the road in February on a two month "Every Never Is Now" headlining tour. Full list of confirmed dates is below.

If you slept on Never Better back when it was released in February, don't sweat it. You still have time to get hip to one of the year's best releases before the year is over. Never Better combines a unique, powerful blend of rock, punk and hip hop that's appealing to a wide range of musical tastes. Just ask Kanye West and Pete Wentz, they dig.

Freelance Whales To Release “Weathervanes” Debut LP On Frenchkiss/Mom + Pop Records Out March 16th 2010

Freelance Whales To Release “Weathervanes” Debut LP
On Frenchkiss/Mom + Pop Records Out March 16th 2010
Play Webster Hall This Friday December 18th With Fanfarlo

NPR : "Freelance Whales: Busking to the Big Time"

NME : "It's awash with gentle, naive bliss, and if you're the type that likes to observe hooks blossoming with the pace of an actual flower opening, then you might have just found a new favourite band."”

Stereogum : "Band To Watch" - "There's palpable warmth and tactful touch that crackles throughout their strongest tunes's group chants, harmonies, that should prove irresistible..."

Brooklyn Vegan : "The band's varied indie-pop has a humble, homespun quality to it. They lean on banjos and xylophones for tender rural sounds to a good effect”

Paste Magazine : Freelance Whales use banjo, harmonium, cello, glockenspiel, synthesizers and guitars to create something that sounds a lot like pure joy

To call them multi-instrumentalists might be a little overdone. The kids in Freelance whales are really just collectors, at heart. They don't really fancy buffalo nickels or Victorian furniture, but over the past two years, they've been collecting instruments, ghost stories, and dream-logs. Somehow, from this strange compost heap of little sounds and quiet thoughts, songs started to rise up like steam from the ground.

The first performance of these songs took place in January of 2009, in Staten Island's abandoned farm colony, a dilapidated geriatric ward, in one of New York's lesser visited boroughs. A seemingly never-ending jigsaw of small rooms, the farm colony ate them whole and threatened to never regurgitate them. And even though the onlookers were only spiritual presences, the group was still palpably nervous and visibly cold. After a bit of singing, strumming and stomping asbestos, they realized that they'd found a good crowd. They heard a bit of clapping from an adjacent room, also some laughing, but not a single soul asked about their record.

Weathervanes, the groups debut LP, finished tracking just a few nights earlier. Swirling with organic and synthetic textures, interlocking rhythmic patterns, and light harmonic vocals, the record works to tell a simple, pre-adolescent love story: a young male falls in love with the spectral young femme who haunts his childhood home. He chases her in his dreams but finds her to be mostly elusive. He imagines her alive, and wonders if someday he'll take on her responsibilities of ghosting, or if maybe he'll join her, elsewhere.

Since their brief residency at the Farm Colony, Freelance Whales have taken to city streets, subway platforms, and stages with their swirling nostalgia. Many people who found them playing in those public spaces, managed to forget what train they were supposed to take; some of them forgot what language they originally spoke. And so, after playing in New York City, almost exclusively, for about a year, they embarked on their first tour of the United States, and Canada. They saw buffalos posted on hilltops, armies of windmills, and lots of lovely people who let the music run their blood in reverse.

"Brooklyn/Manhattan" Digital 7" Debuts #4 Alternative Albums & #18 Alternative Singles iTunes Charts

"Brooklyn/Manhattan" Digital Only 7":
A Side: "Brooklyn"
B Side: "Clinton St. Girl"

"I was a scrawny, dopey kid - the worst athlete on the face of the planet," says Wakey!Wakey! frontman Mike Grubbs. "You know tee ball? I got to first base one time."
Good thing Grubbs had a burgundy baby grand to wail on instead, the centerpiece of a Partridge-like music room that also housed a French horn, clarinet, violin and autoharp. Grubbs started climbing scales and chords here when he was 5. Back then, his mother—a longtime piano teacher and choir director—would ask the kids to sight read songs before they could even think of eating cereal. And homework, why, that was something you did simply to score more bench time.

“For every subject done,” he says, “I could play the piano for an hour. It was almost like video games for me.”

The games got a bit more complicated in high school, as Grubbs stumbled upon the songbooks of Billy Joel and Elton John. Not to mention the arena-ready anthems of Led Zeppelin. That unholy trinity, combined with the three B’s—Bach, Beethoven and Brahms—was enough to steer Grubbs away from the church music he was forced to focus on from an early age.

“One of my main influences now is the fact that I didn’t have someone teach me proper jazz or rock playing,” explains Grubbs. “I had no idea how to put a song together; no one telling me, ‘Hey, you should check out Gershwin,’ but it was all so fascinating to me. So I found my own style by experimenting with what works and what doesn’t.”

Before Grubbs could tap his true voice through a string of buzz-stirring Wakey!Wakey! releases on Family Records (two live LPs, a free collection of covers and last spring’s War Sweater EP), the following dues were paid: a totally ‘90s bar gig aimed at pint-slamming college kids; a rock band best described by its beard quotient and Black Crowes nods (Satellite Kid); and two touring musicals (Brigadoon, Camelot). “I’m a tall, skinny straight guy who can sing,” says Grubbs. “That’s basically gold in the musical theater business because there’s none of us.”

Speaking of standing out, Wakey!Wakey! made their presence known over the past couple years by finding a perfect balance between crowd-pleasing pop and art-damaged indie rock. It’s something Grubbs learned from New York’s anti-folk scene and its founding father, Lach. (The Lower East Side icon mentored Grubbs, which isn’t a surprise—Lach shunned the piano the second he heard the Sex Pistols.) “To come from such a repressed musical environment and then hear someone like Regina Spektor perform with such abandon—shouting and hitting her stool with a drum stick—was priceless.”

Nowadays, Grubbs is the crazy one, slapping his piano around and singing like his life depends on it while conducting a rich backdrop of sweeping strings, heavenly harmonies, and enough delicate details to make Wakey!Wakey!’s first proper LP feel like an Oscar-nominated film soundtrack. Which is ironic to say the least. After all, One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn loved a Wakey!Wakey! set so much he tapped their sun-stroked “War Sweater” track for season 6’s finale and recruited Grubbs for a recurring role. That’d be the tale of a bartender/musician named, err, Grubbs—a strangely familiar life story hinted at in such standout Wakey!Wakey! songs as “Almost Everything,” “Twenty-Two,” and “Got It All Wrong.”

“We set out to make an album this time,” explains Grubbs. “I realize that’s not where people say this business is headed these days, but there’s something about translating a year’s worth of experience into ten songs and letting that tell the story. I feel lucky to have the chance to do that on my own terms.”

You may know Nick as the long haired bass player on the early Kyuss albums or as the mysterious Rex Everything in The Dwarves. Others will know him as one of the creative partners behind Queens Of The Stone Age and more recently the screaming front man of Mondo Generator. He is a man that should need no introduction to rock fans across the world.

Starting his musical career as a teenager with some friends from Palm Desert, California, Oliveri played bass and wrote a number of songs on the first two albums of desert rock pioneers Kyuss. The band would go on to establish them as a cult band worldwide and ensure high interest in all the members' future projects.

One of those projects became Oliveri's most successful commercial venture; it was of course Queens Of The Stone Age. Alongside song writing partner Josh Homme, Oliveri played on and co-wrote the bands two most critically acclaimed and successful albums 'Rated R' and 'Songs For The Deaf'.

After a split with the band in 2004, he focused his energies on his own band Mondo Generator, while also being a part time member of The Dwarves and playing bass in the very occasional band Moistboyz alongside members of Ween and Butthole Surfers.

Throughout his career delivering audiences wild and loud rock shows with the aforementioned bands, Oliveri has found time to play intimate, solo acoustic shows. Just him and his guitar, blending songs he has written for the bands he has played in, specifically written songs for the solo shows and well chosen covers. In this format he has further showcased what a great songwriter and musician he is.

In October, he documented these solo adventures with the release of his album "Death Acoustic", a simple collection of home recordings compiled over the last twelve months highlighting this format. The release was the catalyst for a world tour which now finally hits his home country.

Twenty two year-old singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist LIGHTS crafts sparkling, otherworldly electro-pop that has already garnered her over 19 million plays on MySpace, a #1 hit in Canada and the 2009 JUNO for New Artist of the Year. LIGHTS was selected as an inaugural artist for MySpace’s new Introducing program, and she stars in her own short-form motion-comic series Audio Quest: A Captain LIGHTS Adventure, which airs on MTV and MTV.com. Rolling Stone called LIGHTS a “retro new wave…keytar-rocking pixie,” and the Toronto Star praised her as "the very epitome of D.I.Y. pin-up cool."

LIGHTS has also released Ice Pack, an exclusive remix EP. The EP features six unique versions of “Ice”, an 80's influenced, irresistibly catchy track off The Listening. The Ice Pack is available exclusively online at www.iamlights.com. The EP features a diverse group of highly respected artists and producers: Rancid front man Tim Armstrong works his magic on “Ice”, as does Nine Inch Nails/A Perfect Circle’s Danny Lohner. Underground UK remixers Modernaire (La Roux, MGMT) and world-renowned producer and engineer Mark ‘Spike’ Stent who has worked with Bjork, Muse, No Doubt and more also contribute. Toronto-based LIGHTS enlisted her Canadian peers as well: award-winning Vancouver hip-hop artist K-OS and up & coming songwriter and producer Colin Munroe each personalize a version of “Ice.”

The official LIGHTS store is running a special promotion where customers can get $5 off their order when they buy Ice Pack and any two apparel items. In addition, every order through 12/31 will have free shipping. Visit the official LIGHTS store at http://www.IAMLIGHTS.com/shop

The Clientele announce US (& Canada) Tour!

Alasdair, Mark, James & Mel will be stateside in February to support their new album, Bonfires on the Heath.

Featured on individual critic's year end lists at The Onion AV Club, Pitchfork, NPR Music, and more, Bonfires on the Heath is in a sense a return to the Clientele’s roots; the dreamlike suburban landscapes first encountered in the early singles, their trippy sense of menace stronger now. Back in London, they’ve drawn on older traditions of English folk, which exist here side by side with the band’s more familiar bossa and pop elements. Mel Draisey’s contributions on piano and violin add beautifully to MacLean’s timeless, eerie songs.

"For those who cherished the late, great Go-Betweens, Galaxie 500, and The Zombies, take heart--here is your new favorite album, filled to bursting with shivering tremolo guitars, surrealist poetry and the sort of melodies that made the kids' knees buckle whenever "Time of the Season" graced the airwaves" ~Paste Magazine

"A band out of time, The Clientele conjures the ghosts of chirpy British pop and the mellow, sepia-toned rock of the mid-1960s. Yet, while there are clearly trace elements of Donovan and The Zombies, the band's debt to the past is more about feeling and mood than note-for-note re-creations." ~NPR Song of the Day

VOICEsVOICEs to tour US with Prefuse 73 and Gaslamp Killer this January ; "Origins" out next month

VOICEsVOICEs to tour US with Prefuse 73 and Gaslamp Killer this January ; "Origins" out next month

Experimental rock duo hit the road on the US as both the openers and the live backing band for Prefuse 73. He also will be playing with their band as well.

"Their sound-- part ambient electronic, part primal scrawl-- is tough to pin down and always taking unexpected turns"
Pitchfork Media

"schized-out drone pop"
Metromix

VOICEsVOICEs are a two-piece making warm, seductively atmospheric, mostly instrumental music from Los Angeles. Formed in June of 2008, Jenean Farris and Nico Turner, came together to break away from the musical mold they were confined to in previous projects to defy what they've been taught, and challenge what they know. Their use of pedals, looping, spellbinding vocals, and heartrending drumming results in hauntingly beautiful music that will awaken even your most subconscious dreams and fears. L.A. Record says "Los Angeles has one of the most exciting music scenes going on in the world right now and in the center of all this is the darling female duo, VOICEsVOICEs."

Both musicians were originally drummers for other bands and wanted to show that drummers were creative musical forces and more than merely providers of backbeats for other people's songs. The project began as an experiment in the creation of sound, with masking vocals that swirl like ghosts in a sea of reverb, beats and distortion, creating a sound that amounted to a beautiful clutter. Although they hadn't much experience performing other instruments prior to combining their forces, or perhaps because of it, they developed a psychedelic ambient sound that is unique in a way that separates them from the other bands in the abundant Los Angeles music scene.

While they both still play drums and various percussions, they learned to incorporate guitars, pedals and looping effects, even as they were still learning to play the instruments. Rather than procrastinate in a rehearsal space, they chose to perform live as often as they could at any place that would welcome them. Through dozens of shows in their early months, they developed their style and their fanbase at the same time, playing mostly in galleries and all age venues. Rather than relying on luck to be discovered, and confident in the power of their sweeping scores, they released their first self-produced and self-released ep, "Sounds Outside" within a few months of forming and it was warmly received, garnering rave reviews from Los Angeles publications like LA Record and grabbing the attention of influential label Manimal Vinyl and producer Prefuse 73.

Quickly advancing to the the top indie rock clubs in town like Spaceland, The Echo and The Smell, their fanbase and reputation grew in leaps and bounds. They were immediately snatched up by Manimal Vinyl who is releasing their new ep "Origins" in January. The EP was produced by Prefuse 73, who postponed his own recording for the opportunity to work with the band. In the studio, Prefuse added textural instruments and arrangements and brought the two musicians vocals closer to the forefront. The result is a combination of compositions that fall somewhere between Enya and the Plastic Ono Band. Barely a year after combining forces, VOICEsVOICEs were opening shows for artists like Blackheart Procession and Octopus Project In November, 2009 they were tapped for a month-long European touring with Brightblack Morning Light and Rio en Medio. Their shows are notable for attracting some of the top local musicians and scenemakers who become avid fans after one or two listens. Their soundscapes will send you into a peaceful slumber or make you scream and want to break things, sometimes causing both reactions at the same time.

Amanda Palmer Shares New Song & Tegan and Sara "Hell" Video on YouTube!

As an early holiday treat we'd like to share two new videos from Amanda Palmer who we are thrilled to be working with in the new year! Inspired by Tegan's explanation of what the song is really about, Amanda created a video with director Michael Pope for the Tegan and Sara song, "Hell," while in NYC this November. She also wrote a song titled "gaga, palmer, madonna" yesterday and immediately made a live video share with fans.

You can check out Amanda Palmer's video for "Hell" here and the video for "gaga, palmer, madonna" here. More to come about what Amanda Palmer has coming up in 2010.

NYC’s Sex Slaves KICK OFF 2010 WITH A 21-CITY TREK WITH WEDNESDAY 13’S NEWEST UNIT GUNFIRE 76

SEX SLAVES LATEST EFFORT WASTED ANGEL OUT NOW AT
ALL DIGITAL OUTLETS

“The album that can turn a timid housewife into a passion struck vampire, and can absolutely encourage the devil’s tongue from a matador’s daughter.”
– Art+Culture.com

Hot on the heels of their east coast tour with the Genitorturers, the Sex Slaves jump start 2010 with a 21 city tour with Gunfire 76, Wednesday 13’s new band of outlaws. The Sex Slaves’ new record, “Wasted Angel”, is available now from all daring digital retailers.

“The Sex Slaves are red light Romeos, Casanovas of cock rock, virile vaudevillians with a bevy of backstage beauties, ass-strapped and action-packed like an orgy of nighttime nonsense.” - Sleazegrinder.com

Hailing from New York City’s lower east side the Sex Slaves--Eric13, Del Cheetah and J/Bomb sound like they've just stumbled out of a rat-infested, garbage-strewn alleyway after an all-night binge. Their music is a sleazy, trashy excursion into the sordid underworld of Rock n' Roll where absolutely anything goes and where very few participants actually get out in one piece. It's a sinfully enticing noise born out of the gutter and raised on the deserted street corners of New York’s Lower East Side. It's recklessly clothed head-to-toe in denim and black leather with a permanent, sneering scowl, a magnificent addiction, a pleasurable perversion, a lewd and crude musical art form worthy of undying devotion.

It's Rock n' Roll, and the Sex Slaves wear it well, live it proudly and play it LOUD, or don't play it at all!!

“Think of your favorite band. You know the one that makes you smile when you hear the first few notes of their song or the one that makes you scream your voice hoarse at their live shows. Well press the mental erase button on those has-beens and prepare to meet your new favorite band.” - Antimusic.com

THE ARCHITECTS hit the road in early 2010 with Flogging Molly, Frank Turner!!

THE ARCHITECTS
Pound the Pavement THE HARD WAY
On The GREEN 17 TOUR with FLOGGING MOLLY & FRANK TURNER

Kansas City, MO – After spending their entire Summer on the Vans Warped Tour, The Phillips brothers - Brandon, Zach, Adam - and their best friend Keenan, otherwise known as THE ARCHITECTS are packing their bags again for another cross country trek in support of their fourth album THE HARD WAY (Skeleton Crew). This time, the boys will be touring with Flogging Molly and Frank Turner (tour dates below).

Produced, mixed, and engineered by KC’s own Aaron Conner (Cher, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G.), The Hard Way is drawn from the deep lyrical pools of songsmiths like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Tom Petty, while the roaring, crashing sonic inspiration comes from the likes of The Clash, AC/DC, The Replacements and The Who. “We are still our father’s sons with respect to our heroes,” says singer/songwriter and eldest brother Brandon describing the evolution of The Architects sound and the creation of The Hard Way. Still stubbornly free of gimmicks, costumes and celebreality bullshit, The Architects are all piss and vinegar and good tunes, delivered with guts and authenticity…just as it should be.

Straight Line on Milan Records -
Stepping out with a collage of musical influences, Straight Line is a fair bit different from his primary band but one key element remains the same - Pete Bernhard's defining vocal style, unique phrasing and his distinctive point of view.

The Devil Makes Three live @ KEXP was released digitally on 8.11,
including four tracks played live in the studio of the famous Seattle based radio station and an interview.

Quotes and Quotes
Venus.zine- 5 out of 5
“The Santa Cruz–based threesome borrows elements of ragtime, country, folk, and rockabilly music and approaches them with a fiery punk rock proclivity, creating a modern but true reflection of vintage American blues.”

Under the Radar: 7 out of 10
“...like the best bourbon, Do Wrong Right will go down smooth, and then help to steer the rest of your day”

Eastern Surf Mag
“Punk-tinged, whiskey-fueled, old-timey/bluegrass/ragtime blend from this percussion-less Santa Cruz, CA, trio. Charmingly ragged vocal harmonies and a legendary live show only add to the band’s allure.”

Flavorwire
“The Devil Makes Three play a tongue-in-cheek form of American roots music, bucking genre conventions with lyrics that trend toward atypical subjects like crack abuse and getting your picture taken with the Four Horsemen.”

Hear Ya
“The Devil Makes Three has just released the latest chapter of their gypsy-punk-hillbilly-bluegrass-blues gospel in an album called Do Wrong Right. That description is a mouthful, but DM3 is far from ordinary. The drummer-less trio consists of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean. Their sound is driven by rhythm and three-part harmonies that beg you to boogie down, even if you aren’t the boogie down type.”

Jambase
“If we're going to get through this so-called "New Depression," we're going to need some troubadours to sing our survival tales. The Devil Makes Three fit that bill perfectly on latest offering Do Wrong Right (released April 21 on Milan Records), giving voice to those firewater nights that bleed into the horrendous crash of daylight, splitting headaches and tremors before we pick ourselves up to do it all over again.”

The Punk Rock Site

The Devil Makes Three quite possibly are the best band that you have never heard of. Constantly on tour, selling out dates across the country and in their neck of the woods on the West Coast, this band is busy packing their shows night after night, largely thanks to word of mouth.

Over the past 7 years, The Devil Makes Three have garnered fans the old school way - playing a city, making friends, conquering fans and moving on. When they hit the next town, venues are packed with folks that heard from a friend in a city that the band had played before.
Because of this, The Devil Makes Three have established thousands of die-hard and devout fans.

LIVING SACRIFICE Announce The Abominable Snowtour February 5-28

Co-Headlining Tour with WAR OF AGES

Band Bludgeons U.S. in support of new album, The Infinite Order, out January 26, 2010

Dec 17, 2009 - Metal legends LIVING SACRIFICE have announced a U.S. co-headlining tour, dubbed 'The Abominable Snowtour', that will crisscross the nation from February 5-28. The band will share top billing throughout the tour with metal cohorts WAR OF AGES, with support from SHAI HULUD, LIONHEART and THE GREAT COMMISSION.

"We are really excited to get out and play some of the new stuff live," says LIVING SACRIFICE frontman Bruce Fitzhugh. "We're also stoked on the other bands on the tour. I've been a fan of SHAI HULUD for years, and we have become close with the WAR OF AGES guys over the last few years, playing together at festivals. We're just really glad to be able to do this."

The tour comes on the heels of the release of The Infinite Order, in stores January 26 on SolidState Records. The album - LIVING SACRIFICE's seventh full-length overall, and first since 2002's acclaimed Conceived In Fire - is shaping up to be one of 2010's most hotly anticipated metal releases. The Infinite Order finds the band returning to its thrash roots for an unapologetic reminder of how unrelenting, honest metal is done at a time when some folks could use a reminder.

There aren't too many metal lifers out there who AREN'T named SLAYER or METALLICA that are still making ferociously relevant music 20 years into their career. LIVING SACRIFICE are among the few and the proud, and despite the fact that they have inspired a huge portion of today's young metal bands, they're still playing like they've got something to prove."

LIVING SACRIFICE have opened the gates for album pre-orders, with several options available, including added value such as DVDs and t-shirts. Options can be viewed at:

Hayaino Daisuki Announce New Album, "The Invincible Gate Mind of The Internal Fire Hell, or Did You Mean Hawaii Daisuki?," Out February 23rd on Hydra

Hayaino Daisuki is a full-on thrash-grind-stravaganza. – BrooklynVegan

You'll have no idea what Jon Chang is saying, but you'll remember every word. - Pitchfork

Grindcore has always been an art form attempted by few and mastered by even fewer. DISCORDANCE AXIS should be considered to be one of these few masters. - Apeshit.org

I was like you once... Often a little too lazy to get out of bed to blow a piss, old milky cereal bowls... so yeah, I know exactly what you're thinking... you're thinking, how could Hayaino Daisuki, arguably the most influential power-thrash outfit (in japan), outdo what they already pulled off on their debut EP, Headbanger's Karaoke Club Dangerous Fire? But they did... let me break it down.

OK so, Hayaino Daisuki has always been the tightest and the fastest band out there, right? Hayaino's new record, other wise known as The Invincible Gate Mind of the Infernal Fire Hell, or Did You Mean Hawaii Daisuki? maintains the aforementioned titles while gaining them another... After this record hits the shelves, people like you and me are going to have to start referring to Hayaino Daisuki as the fastest, tightest and most melodic metal band ever! And dude, if you're into aggressive music you've come to the right place... listening to this band, and in particular the record in question, is like crossing streams with a fire hose... You know... Obviously you run the risk of injury, but you're stoned and growing up in the suburbs...
